According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), recycling one million cell phones can save enough energy to power 185 American homes for an entire year. In 2007, approximately 14 million people recycled cell phones and more recent studies indicate that less than 10% of all cell phones are actually recycled. While that may seem like a substantial number, compare it against the 130,000,000 cell phones that ultimately end up in landfills each year.
Cell phones contain toxic metals that can eventually enter the environment when one is thrown into the trash. But, when proper cell phone recycling methods are used, those metals can be recycled and put back into the manufacturing stream. This ultimately helps lower costs and drastically reduces the need to mine for new metals.
